Hi Audrey

Sorry you are in so much pain at the moment. When I was first diagnosed I had awful pain in my jaw. I couldn't open my mouth. When I wanted to eat I had to literally put my fingers between my lips and prise them apart and could only eat soft stuff because chewing was so painful. I have never heard of anyone else having that problem until now. Mine just seemed to stop after I got on the mxt and hasn't bothered me since. It might help taking something to relax you before you go to bed like camemile or it might be because you are not relaxed when you go to sleep and you are grinding your teeth or not relaxing your jaw. You could also try some relaxation by concentrating on each part of your body and noticing how tense you are and physically relaxing each part. I do hope it will settle down like mine did.

Hi Audrey

I had a problem with my left jaw, which lasted for quite a few months. It would really ache when I went to bed but not so bad in the day, as the RA was not under control I just tied it in with everything else but bit surprised it only happened one side. I did mention it to the consultant on one visit but so many other things were going on he didn t really take much notice, to cut a long story short eventually it showed up that I had an ear infection, I took buckets load of ear drops in desperation it would go away and it did in the end, this was about three months ago.

If they can t determine the problem perhaps your consultant we give you an MRI scan as pain in your jaw can be really nasty especially with trying to eat. I m sure others will give you some thoughts on this too.

Hi Audrey

I too have had problems with my jaw and it seems to happen randomly but very painful. I have mentioned it to the consultant and he said that this can happen with RA. I do hope it soon subsides and that they get your medication sorted.

Best Wishes

Hi Audrey

In the past I have posted on here about the awful jaw pain. In my case it usually lasts for around three days when I only eat soup and yoghurts. Please see link about this, note that only 17% of people with RA get it in the jaw http://www.arthritis-tre....com/jaw-arthritis.html

Hi Audery just noticed this post, could this be T.M.J, i have this, pain on eating even talking is painful, i went to the dentist as i thought it was wisdom tooth but x-ray etc ruled this out, i was then sent to maxillofacial at local hosp where i was diagnosed with Temporomandibular joint.

Check this out on google, it is quite common along side R.A.

Hope this is helpful.

Hi

Also had problems with the jaw here.

Phorpain gel is on prescription and very helpful as you rub it on the skin as much as you need it.

I find that it is short lived for me, a few days its awful and then it starts to ease.

Hi,

Exactly the same for me, Jenni.

I have jaw ache right now- both sides and chewing and laughing is very painful.

Then some days it is literally 'gone'.

RA, who needs it?!

HI Audrey, everyone

I TOTALLY get you...

My Jaw Pain was present at the start of diagnosis (which was last October)..
The pain is unlike toothache, and more like being punched in the side of the face..hurts to yawn or laugh and eating something like a baguette sandwich..out of the question!!!!..

some days good..most days bad...

My Rheum tried me on a gel called ketoprophen which is a gel that you rub on..it does work, remember to wash you hands after as it works through the skin...however in my case it wasnt enough..

It got so bad that I asked if a steroid injection was possible in the Jaw...Im sure a lot of members understand that when your in a great deal of pain, you'll do almost anything to make it go away....E.g have someone shove a needle in your face....

And thats exactly what happened to me yesterday.. and I promise...it didnt hurt...Believe me when I say I was scared to death..but it really was ok..luckily he was very skilled and has done it many time before...I know they gave me something to numb area..Possibly Linocaine???...but I got full movement back and no pain whatsoever..

Im being referred to Orthodontics, and will prob have to wear a gum shield over night to help keep my chops have full motion, but Id rather that than the constant feeling of waking up feeling that ive been to 'Fight Club' the night before..

Obviously talk it over with your Consultant..see what topical meds are suitable for you...ask to be referred to Orthodondics and get their opinion too...
Jaws are joints...so effected by RA...One of the hardest things I learned about this Disease is that whilst we all have a certain level of simularities..it can effect us all in different ways...

Hope your O.K? and by the way, this is my first post Smile

Hi Audrey,
Jaw pain on and off but last week whilst eating very soft fruit and yoghurt breakfast it just clicked so loudly made the cat jump and me cry, breakfast postponed. 2 hours later just fine and dandy. Mine seems to come and go but when its here is not pleasant so I feel for you.

Hi Audrey - Oooooh sounds so painful. It is the one place I do not suffer (fingers crossed) and I cannot imagine anything worse. When it is in your head you cannot get away from it.

Hi MOB - Welcome to the forum and again sorry that you suffer from pain in the jaw but glad you managed to get yours sorted out.

My Daughter has just had to wear a brace for two years and she thought that was bad - wait until I tell her how lightly she got off.

Hi Audrey and Mob, i saw a new rheummy nurse last week and when she checked my joints she felt my jaw. This is the first time anyone has ever checked this before. Mine aches and crunches and clicks when i have a flare or in cold weather.

hi

thanks for all your reply and thank you for the support to day is the first day for ages i have not had the pain in my jaw but as with RA my elbows are hurting alot.
went to see the rummy nurse they took me off enbrel 3 mths ago and left me on just pain killer they have now said the embrol was sending my bloods mad but it was cooling my RA down now my bloods are ok but RA is running free again she has said i need to go for a scan and if my bloods are the same and my RA keeps going then she says i will be one of the unlucky ones and will just have to wait for the joints to reach a level and then have them replaced so lets see what next month brings.

take care

Audrey.

Hi Audrey

I may be jumping the gun here. but I really think you should ring the NRAS helpline for some advice. I can't believe what you have been told. OK - I'm no medic but it seems to me gobsmackingly wrong to leave you with no meds to wait until your joints need replacing!!!! There are so many drugs out there, including Rituximab, Cimzia, Toccilizumab and a whole raft of others for you to try. Please, please contact NRAS now and ask for some advice.

Much love Jeanxxxx

Hi Audrey

Further to Jean's comment, if you would like to contact the helpline team we may be able to help you with information and support. The consultant may have good reasons for keeping you on painkillers at the moment, but it is certainly worth questioning, as this would not be the standard approach. If you give us a call we can talk this through with you in a bit more detail and hopefully help to prepare you before this discussion with the consultant. Our helpline is available Mon-Fri from 9.30-4.30 on 0800 298 7650.

Kind regards
